artThis tour is not only for connoisseurs of art and heritage but for the international tourist looking forward to sampling a delicious slice of Mumbai’s colonial era.

Remnants of art, architecture and heritage of the British Raj are rooted mainly in Colaba, the southern tip of the city, which is also called the Art Precinct or Heritage District.

Now interwoven with life in the 21st-century, this area is a vibrant patchwork quilt of old and new. Yes, it’s a veritable game of peek-a-boo!

Our professional tour guides will identify and discuss the distinct styles of architecture represented by these buildings – Victorian Neo-Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, Renaissance Revival and Edwardian Neo Classical – and explain their ties to the past.

Some of the outstanding heritage buildings in this area are the Prince of Wales Museum, Regal Cinema, Jehangir Art Gallery, Elphinstone College and Institute of Science.

Blending f art and culture on a colourful palette is Kala Ghoda (Black Horse), a crescent-shaped sub-precinct in Colaba. Kala Ghoda houses numerous art galleries, museums and cultural spaces, including a famous pavement art gallery. The restaurants, shops and boutiques here add a wealth of diversity to the precinct.

Our tours also introduce you to Mumbai’s formal art history which showcases different schools of Indian art, ranging from modern Indian art and its evolution from the early 1900s to the present day. The galleries here also reflect how Western influences found a niche in the city’s collective consciousness through artistic expression.

BT’s Art Walks appeal to different sensibilities and we customise our tours to suit specific requirements.
